During a workshop I went to about loving our city, I had the opportunity to hear a couple hundred people share what they love about our city. It’s no surprise to me that many of them said that they love all of the FREE festivals that Indianapolis has to offer. It’s also no surprise that the Month of May was mentioned several times — and not just for the 500 race itself, but the entire month of May in Indianapolis is a treat!
One of the many family friendly opportunities that the 500 brings to Indianapolis is the 500 Festival Kids’ Day. If you have never taken your kids then you are neglecting one of the most fantastic days that Indianapolis has to offer. Remember how much fun families were having during Super Bowl week (month)? This day is set aside just for kids and families.
On Saturday, May 12th, the 500 Festival Kids Day will take place on Monument Circle starting at noon. This is a free event where over 10,000 prizes will be given away — no child will go home empty handed. Entertainment will be a performance group called Plastic Musik, a group that uses percussion techniques and all-plastic instruments! How cool! We might bring that plastic recorder Lulu got as a gift — and leave it behind, ha ha!
Other activities for kids include a 70 foot Ferris wheel, remote controlled race car races, a race car simulator, race themed crafts including princess sashes and pop can race cars, games, face painting, clowns and appearances by celebrity mascots. There will be food available for purchase.
Don’t forget about the 500 Festival Rookie Run at 1pm. There are age appropriate race courses for kids ages 3-12. All runners get a race bib and a medal for finishing. It’s like a really mini mini marathon! The Rookie Run is $6 per child if you register in advance or $10 on site. Next year you can expect to see Lulu out there!
